Clinical Training Program
The training program consists of both the STARS summer camp (beginning June, 2010) and the school-based program (beginning August, 2010). Practicum students and interns are required to participate in both programs for the entire year. Students receive one hour individual supervision beginning in September with daily individual and group supervision throughout the summer camp program. Weekly trainings and group supervision begins in September and continues throughout the year. Students follow the school calendar of the school in which they are placed. Holidays and vacations follow that school calendar.
Trainees and interns are required to be at their school campus one full day each week, for their “Doc of the Day” assignment, and, at minimum, one additional day each week to see individual patients and run therapy groups. Additionally, trainees and interns are required to be available one afternoon (TBA) for trainings and group supervision.
Partners Programs utilizes behavioral based interventions, along with others, while always focusing on the relationship. Patients are conceptualized from a psychodynamic perspective. Practicum students and interns are expected to be open to learning these methods.
STARS Summer Camp
STARS Camp is a six-week summer intensive day treatment program for children ages 4-17 years old who have social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges. It is a small, nurturing environment for children who experience peer isolation due to their psychological problems. These children become overwhelmed and cannot integrate into other camp programs. STARS Camp teaches the child to adapt and grow socially, emotionally, and behaviorally, manage frustration and anger, and develop social skills while enjoying a real camp experience. The camp rules are coping strategies taught to the campers to help them develop different behaviors. The rules become the language of the camp. Group counseling is done on a daily basis. Counselors have an opportunity to intervene in vivo with the campers helping them to learn more effective coping strategies. Training and supervision is on-going throughout the camp program.
The Partners’ School-Based Program
The Partner’s School-Based Program utilizes an integrated system of elements that when used together produces success with even the most difficult students. Partners work closely with school and district administrators to ensure a successful implementation and execution of the program for the most advantageous outcome. The program can be customized to fit the school’s needs, however, we have found great success in the following combination of elements. Parents can be notified of the program through the district’s newsletter, principal’s letter, or PTA presentation. There are five key components offered for interns to experience. They are:
